Archicad at its best). I know Max can do anything, Cartia and Rhino are magic tools, even good ol’ 3D AutoCAD could reproduce the same, but following these two operations via Archicad my slab stays a slab and the wall is still a wall, even though the slab has a wobbly bottom and the wall looks like a lace curtain.
Reconstructing drawing-sets and the case of the Great Pretenders. Something is fundamentally wrong with the way AEC manages its information: We have numerous solutions available to handle large amounts of paper-based (flat) drawings in a reasonably sophisticated way. Reconstructing drawing-sets and the case of the 'G.
How well can you tell? (…If the drawings in front-of you have been produced via 2D or 3D methods?). The moment you are exposed to drawings (hard or soft copies) you become extremely vulnerable to them. Give me a couple of sheets of your drawings and I’ll tell who you are! Archicad at its best). at 7:34 AM.
One of my colleagues once got quite upset and accused me of being environmentally irresponsible by promoting this rainbow-theory, yet I never did suggest (what he accused me of) that the fluffed-up drawing-sets they still produced in black-ink (and measured in tons) should be printed in full colour.
The software is compatible with the leading 3d design packages like Revit®, Archicad®, Microstation®, Tekla® and Google Sketchup® as well as all standard 2D drawings. CostX® also imports collection of drawing files as well as external rate information and exports to diversified formats, brining interoperability to a superior level.
After all, most construction contracts are still based on drawings and there is a belief that ‘we build off drawings’. Yet it is undisputable, that a large percentage of those drawings are created in a model-based software. And the majority of the stakeholders can only access this data via PDFs or printed off drawings.
I should start with a disclaimer: I model in Archicad 13; That is whenever I need to assess something quickly and am not constrained by other project-needs nor the limitations of the software itself. So, what I am about to write may no longer be an issue in Archicad 14, nor the other modelling packages people use.
This approach is somewhat surprising considering that in most contemporary construction contracts PDF’s as the digital representations of drawings have often higher standing than model files or even DWGs. Why are there no more efforts made to guide PDF users through thousands of drawings by the originators?
When I started with ArchiCAD some 27 years ago, I did not think we’d grow old together. I learned to use the blimming thing and added to the knowledge over and over, wore the badge of the weirdo ArchiCAD user with pride. Where is the Archicad equivalent of their time? picture of an old Archicad project) Yet we had.
Of course that would not quite work for the drawing outputs (as beams have to look differently on plans than say walls.) I am not too concerned about the drawings. I used Archicad for this particular exercise; I believe that most other ‘main stream’ AEC modelling packages work in a very similar way; Bring on the BIM gizmos!
First thing, first: “The survey asked a series of questions to establish current usage of both 2D and 3D CAD, as a precursor to determining likely future engagement with Building Information Modelling (BIM).” … actually, this was the question: “When producing CAD drawings, which of the following tools do you mainly use?”
I started learning technical drafting on my father’s drawing machine, the type with two rulers fixed at right angle to each other but adjustable to any angle through a button. (he Ten years ago I amazed the local Archicad supplier by a colourful CV fully prepared on Plotmaker. It was totally inappropriate.
And there is more: I’ve had numerous run-ins with Archicad and GS over the years too. Being so bitter about Autodesk is to do a bit with my abstract being rejected by the Australian Revit Users’ Conference. I never quite got the point of existence of Vectorworks and have largely stayed away from Microstation.
Go into any architectural consultancy employing people from different parts of the world and soon you’ll find two of them arguing about the way hinging of doors must be represented on drawings. Cadimage, the NZ Archicad-tool-developer is wisely catering for all tastes in their Doorbuilder. and indicate the opening of the door.
I’ve been known for criticizing Autodesk for many years and people tend to brush it off as ‘sour grapes’ – me being jealous that they’ve beaten Graphisoft’s ArchiCAD into ground – the current software of my choice. On the lines of any BIM is better than CAD and any CAD is better than hand drawing? And how about the ‘old and wise’ ones?
ArchiCAD is my tool of choice and I really enjoy how it handles PDF’s within its BIM models. ArchiCAD imports PDF’s as Drawings (as opposed to images) 2. ArchiCAD allows one to use the Trace&Reference with PDF’s the same way as with any other drawing element. One can use colours on the PDF’s 8.
Archicad and Tekla are old enough to know this. My everyday work IFC is working well but I'm using ArchiCAD and engineer is using Tekla Structure. With some care, I was able to export useable IFC files from ArchiCAD. Are we living on the same planet? Working in the same (AEC) industry? Really, get real! My opinion.
A kind of Archicad ambassador too – you saw her, you knew the software behind. But then there is a long slide on a snake back to: ‘drawings should look like this and that.’ Why can’t we get rid of the drawing? Still does, though Kate now is well retired. Anyway, looking at Kate, I feel that we’d come a long way.

Traditionally, a value that was represented on a drawing may not correctly corresponded with the value within the specification simply due to a ‘typo’ An example being where a ’60 minute fire door’ has been recorded on the drawing but has been recorded as ’90 minutes fire rating’ within the specification.
GS’s ArchiCAD is pretty snazzy with large numbers of PDFs, able to bring them into the digital environment and manages these through nifty color/trace/slider options. It copes well with sizes and is very agile in handling them through all of its 2D views (plans, elevations, sections). Part 1: [link]'

Even if I consider the vastly superior ArchiCAD and the Bentley/Microstation range, all the more so Tekla and everything Trimble had collected over the last year or two - these tools, all together are still ‘so last century’. I had my first training in Revit in 2004 and get around it OK. Although, it is.
The contrast of texture is a method that draws attention to a particular point or place of a design by the texture. Visual weight is the property that gives elements in a design an ability to draw attention. Whereas if an element has a high visual weight that means that this element has the probability of drawing eyes towards it.
