I am currently studying the options for a MEP firm that has been using AutoCAD for the last 15 years. Their AutoCAD has been highly customized. There are great standards in place and the whole company seems to know what to do to get construction documents out the door. They want AutoCAD. AutoCAD is best for drafting.

Why should I walk away from a proven product like AutoCAD, when I have so much invested in it? I can export ABS objects to AutoCAD choosing to flatten them to 2D AutoCAD entities or convert them to be read by an appropriate object enabler. Faster I produce construction documents faster in ABS.

That being said, someday we will know, and someday our contract documents will reflect the legalities of BIM. In the end producing coordinated CDs spending more time on design and less on drafting is the real benefit to MEP firms. AutoCAD is record albums and ABS is CDs. When that happens, my money is on Revit to deliver.
