I've recently been forced to work on an Autocad project out of neccessity (lack of staff). I have to say that after spending 12 hours attempting to somehow remeber what I'm doing in Autocad, it just plain sucks. I simply cannot beleive how painful it is to manipulate "stuff" in 2D CAD versus an object modeler like Revit.

I get regular updates through my FB page on how the big event of The Hong Kong Institute of Building Information Modelling (HKIBIM) planned for the 13 th of December is shaping up. I’ve learned AutoCAD on DOS, in 3D with no mouse in the early 1990s. I owned professional licences of AutoCAD, Revit, Studio Max for many years.

BIM If you are wanting to switch to Revit Systems because you are feeling pressure to complete a BIM model, Keep in mind, nobody can agree to what the Hell a BIM model is. At this stage delivering HVAC and electrical content in model form for interference detection is a real bonus and a valid expectation.

Sure we benefit from the modelling effort in architecture and structure but we can still benefit from the effort without them. Why assume that there is no value in creating a model of the MEP scope of work even if the architect doesnt use Revit? Modeling a project reveals more than doing one in 2D. Nice insight Steve.

I am our lead UAV pilot, creating orthomosaics, for our drafting team to use in AutoCAD to draw roof and pavement plans. I’ll have a 3D model of the site in just a few hours that I will export as a recap file. Now, I wear multiple hats. It’s quite impressive how drones are helping us be more efficient. .

We have Autocad, we have Sketch-Up, we have Revit, and all the various permutations thereof. Outside of being clumsy, the other issue with some of these tools is cost, Codebook for example doesnt work as a business model for small projects, unless youve got the big project(s) to cut your teeth on it and standardize it.

Once an as-built model is done you might want to archive a copy of the model just incase the design scope changes and you have to start all over again with a clean as-built. The model builder is going to have to do partial demolition of walls, floors, roofs, ceilings, etc.

When you have a large project and you want multiple users editing a project at the same time you have to impliment Worksets because Revit typically keeps all project data in a single project file unlike Autocad where we typically separate the project into multiple files. All of your model objects will initially reside in Workset 1.
