Fort de Chartres, a French fortification on the east bank of the Mississippi River, was originally built in 1720 during the colonization of Illinois to defend against the local Meskwaki people. In 1850, the structure was moved to Bellevue, Nebraska, where it continued as a family home until the 1950s.
