Today, construction teams rely on Building Information Modeling (BIM) to create and manage information during the entire lifecycle of a project. Unlike blueprints and CAD, a BIM is intelligent, stores data, and features geometry, allowing for a collaborative experience. Plus, not all your partners might be familiar with it.
I’ve been besotted by ArchiCAD’s ‘zone tool’ lately. I had not always been a fan of it, early in my career, seriously disliked it even, mainly because of its ugly, big zone-stamp. Have grown out of that stage, thank’ goodness and amongst other more crucial things in life, I rediscovered the ‘zone tool’.
For years I’ve been consistently preaching that BIM can be started at any point of a construction project lifecycle and it can be successful. In all mainstream BIM strategies, FM models sit at the end of the chain of Ds – numbered from the 6 th D onwards, following the 3 spatial Ds, cost and time.
The study centered upon the development of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the UK construction industry and its pontential affect on the role of the client’s construction manager (CM). BIM in the UK was not as advanced as claimed in the literature. However, the theories behind the culture of BIM can be dated to 1975, when C.M

This is the third blog post in a series that discusses the advantages of working on concrete projects in a BIM process for structural engineers. The beauty of Revit is that it allows for both approaches, enabling all structural engineers to work in a BIM environment connected to architects, MEP engineers, and the extended project team.

If you are a regular reader looking for the latest technical happenings around BIM, come back later – I have a couple of posts in drafts on the ‘magical power of the prodigious zone tool’ and ‘how productivity can be improved by applying BIM the correct way’. Spoiler alert: this is going to be a soppy, girly post.
Despite BIM having been around for 3+ decades, it is by no means embraced by the global AEC. Most of the industry is uneasy about the BIM thing, yet there is rarely meaningful discussion about it. Many based on and around BIM. This time thing, that we were doing things 10+ (If not 20) years ago that others nowadays call new and revolutionary brings me to the topic I really wanted to write about, and that is ‘how important time is (or is not) in getting BIM really working within this industry?’ Nothing less.
Dreyfus noted that construction companies should be planning ahead — both in terms of taking advantage of incentives like investing/building in specially designated Qualified Opportunity Zones throughout the country and taking advantage of tax credits like 179D and R&D, and preparing their companies to weather economic downturns.

How on earth can an architectural company claim any type of BIM-enablement when they can’t get their 2D areas right? And keep them out of BIM until they do learn to use them? Let’s not name names. It could happen to anyone, really. Simple, 2D fills, sorted by space-categories.
I said it before, and not just once: repackage your product, call it an ‘all encompassing, constructing BIM tool’ and you’ll do more good to the industry than any type of new tool development. How about a pen -colour manager or layer selector or text aligning tool?
