It''s been 14 years since Revit formally began knocking on the doors of architectural firms. As Revit matured there were fewer opportunities for showstopper items. We can''t justify the time and effort required to move to Revit". Revit Structure was introduced (2005) and the conversation began again with engineers.
Years ago I wrote about using Revit to help me coach my son's soccer team. Since I seem to have an unhealthy focus on using Revit for things that might not make any sense it should be no surprise that I'd find a way to avoid using Power Point. I used a screen capture of each slide as an image inserted into drafting views.
When we create a new drafting view we are presented with an empty view. We are free to begin our drafting exercise anywhere we see fit. If we import a simple CAD file that has some lines that define where the 0,0,0 origin is we''ll find out exactly where the origin is in the drafting view (use Auto-Origin to Origin).
For many years now we''ve been able to use a concept called Reference Other View when we create sections, elevations, callouts and drafting views. If you look closely you''ll find you can create a New Drafting View , the default choice in brackets. of Subtle New Features Platform Release Update Revit 2015 Views'
No matter how fast our machines get, I have yet to have someone say "Revit is too fast"! Well if you are looking for a lot of little ways to speed up Revit, here is a list of things to try. Purge the crap out of all your linked Revit files. Compact your Revit files once a week. Restart Revit every 4 hours.
Revit OpEd. Welcome to Steve Staffords Blog ~ Revit OpEd = OPinion EDitorial ~ My view of things Revit, both real and imagined. Importing survey files has always been problematic with Revit. Geometry that is far apart will annoy Revit, geometry more than 20 miles in extents is the current "line in the sand".
Revit OpEd. Welcome to Steve Staffords Blog ~ Revit OpEd = OPinion EDitorial ~ My view of things Revit, both real and imagined. Should I Use Revit for this Project? A recent one I heard was, "The architect isnt using Revit, should we use Revit MEP for this project?". Is this our first project using Revit? -

Our friends over in Autodesk Consulting have been busy helping the Corps create Revit Platform Templates to help increase adoption and improve delivery quality and consistency. The USACE and Autodesk collaborated to create a BIM Template Team consisting of seasoned CAD/BIM Managers with a working knowledge of Revit. The Payoff.
The new Sustainable Projects Exhibit is a potential game changer that could revitalize the now sluggish if not moribund domestic green building industrial complex, that suffers from the lack of regular involvement of the legal profession, and as I recently wrote the resultant, Less than 20% of Green Building Contracts Properly Drafted.
Drafting views look like a blank sheet of paper we can drop your pen and start sketching in. I routinely encounter projects that have very large drafting views, when you know where the origin is. I routinely encounter projects that have very large drafting views, when you know where the origin is.
While Architects grab Revit, the complexities feel insurmountable, especially for smaller contractors in the electrical and mechanical trades. You may want to ask your network connections, as many business who started in drafting and design have made substantial investments to offer BIM services to specialty contractors.
A full explode will recreate all the DWG elements into native Revit elements (assuming it is possible) but a partial explode will produce some native elements and some new DWG elements (blocks). Reducing all DWG elements to equivalent elements in Revit is fraught with peril. Back to Revit and exploded DWG elements.
Revit 2016 has both Mental Ray and Autodesk Raytracer options available to us when we decide to render via our desktop (not using Cloud Rendering). Unfortunately it takes quite some time to plug in and unplug something so intrinsic to how Revit works. Raytracer’s Draft and Medium was much more consistent than for Mental Ray.
NOW AVAILABLE ARE BIM LIBRARIES IN AUTODESK REVIT for Aquatherm. Autodesk Revit allows users to design a building or structure and its components in 3D, annotate the model with 2D drafting elements, and access building information from the model's database. The Revit library is 4D building information modeling capable.
Digital Drafting Whether you liked AutoCAD, MicroStation, or whatever. (I We still drafted, but with digital lines. A Revit project has only one model. AutoCAD 2007 Advantages -Highly adaptive to most any drafting use. ABS will draft AutoCAD into the ground when properly set up. I have never crashed Revit… Ever.
Which reminded me about how I like to use them for a slide deck inside Revit. dont think: Do Revit. My journal of work in Revit as part of a 600+ member architecture firm. What was coming after Revit? Sure Revit is fun and exciting, but its just a tool, and there is always another coming. So if "Revits" replacement does not really interest me (because I dont think there really will be one perse).
With 2012 we can now map Revit fonts to fonts in AutoCAD. Here's a drafting view of four Arial font sizes: 1", 1/2", 1/4" and 3/32" (using view scale of 1:1). Here's how it looks going from Arial to Arial (Revit 2012 - AutoCAD 2012). It's possible the fonts are "off" in Revit to begin with, just can't say for sure.
Might seem a little picky but you can't put an empty drafting view on a sheet. If you had the idea that you could block out a few sheets with placeholder drafting views in your template, sorry.not if they are empty. A little text, or a drafting line, a symbol and it won't be empty though so you can fix it and get nearly what you want!
Revit Systems debuted early this year giving MEP engineers a third choice of CAD technology to use; it may have also caused a bit of confusion on what software is really the best for any given firm. This article should help clarify the choices and provide a solid overview of Revit Systems. So why choose Revit Systems?
dont think: Do Revit. My journal of work in Revit as part of a 600+ member architecture firm. When youre drawing Drafting Lines, you can change the type of curve youre drawing, ie straight, arc, tangent arc, etc, but you cant change the style youre using, ie Wide Lines, Thin Lines, etc. Labels: Drafting , Views.
The question I always seem to come back to is this, What is it going to take to get Revit Systems working for me? BIM If you are wanting to switch to Revit Systems because you are feeling pressure to complete a BIM model, Keep in mind, nobody can agree to what the Hell a BIM model is. When that happens, my money is on Revit to deliver.
Well I hope to point out some of the potential problems you might encounter if you are going down the Revit trail. I hope to follow up this out line with some "how to do it" posts that will give you a little more detail on getting the Revit train a rollin'. You will need to accept what comes with Revit or customize for your office use.
Here's a few things that have come up lately regarding importing dwg data: Revit imports from Model Space unless there is nothing in Model Space. Revit only recognizes the World Coordinate System (WCS) Revit doesn't "see" AutoCAD points, doesn't snap to them, you'll see them but can't "use" them.
Many of Revit m E p families use a nested annotation symbol to provide the standard graphics we are used to seeing in electrical documentation. As such I understand that this view type is intended as the last stop or end of the road with regard to drafting up a detail, for detailing not modeling with.

Revit will complain if you attempt to use them to name a view, sort of. If you create a drafting view and use something like "1/2:12" it won't complain. Try to rename it and you'll be in trouble with Revit. These characters will create errors when Revit tries to create the file using them. An odd quirky item to be sure.

Los Angeles city officials have voted to revitalize a notorious Watts housing project with shops, town homes, and green spaces. The City Council voted unanimously to approve a series of land use and planning laws that took four years to draft.
With little fanfare Revit 2017 is here, brandishing a slightly changed big R logo. In past years I've proposed a What's New in Revit session for RTC Australasia. As a part of the crew for the Revit Technology Conference ( RTC Events ) I also see class proposals for a great many people who really want to say what's on their mind.
You can alter a view for the first floor but if another floor's view is open Revit seems to spend time thinking about that one too, even mention the linked files. It is particulary evident when a project has many linked files.
Revit does have a bias against short lines (as most of us are well aware). I've tried it in various project views including a drafting view without success. It is possible to create shorter lines than we are accustomed to (Revit limits) but only in family files. No I'm not picking on short people, that's Randy Newman's domain.
I created a drafting view and placed a single text element. I type a simple sentence and then clicked the new Close button on the ribbon. I received this nonsensical warning for my effort. Doesn't seem to matter what view I am placing text in, clicking the Close button pops up the warning. I'm curious if others are seeing this too?
I see Revit behaving this way, they regard the first point as ineligible to being tangent because it depends on the bearing of the line, With that assumption or bias, the first point is necessary to make a tangent condition possible. This is same information but for the Revitdrafting view exported to DWG. It could be easier.
Regardless it wouldn't hurt to have a Drafting View set aside with the text versions of all the formulas we use stored there. Since these can be used in schedules and tags, and it has to be done separately for each use, it probably makes sense to document all of the formulas we use so they are easily harvested for another project.
I then used Insert from File > Insert Views from File to acquire a few drafting views. When I closed this new project and decided to open the file the harvested drafting views are stored in this message appeared. I had to exit Revit so it could relinquish its hold on the file before I could start Revit up again to get back to work.
Saw a request recently to change the "Grand Total" (title as Revit calls it) that appears at the bottom of Revit schedules from Sentence Case to Upper Case. Going back to hand drafting and reducing the number of characters to master for simplicity and consistency sake. Why can't we change the "case" of such automagic labeling??
Revit Groups are like AutoCAD blocks. Current view and Revit will paste the text in exactly the same spot on your new sheet. Draft your typical detail in a Drafting View and group the selection. With a dedicated Detail Project file you can copy and paste drafting views from one project to another. Go to File.
The repeating Detail Tool will draft detail components along a line you define at spacing you define. Go to Drafting. Any Revit Text you place in a Detail Component will not show up when you go to use the component in a repeating detail. Repeating Detail. Here you can add new Repeating Details to your project.
There are times when AutoCAD files are required to be added to Revit project files. There two ways to incorporate AutoCAD DWG files into Revit. Inserted DWG files remain static and don’t change in Revit when they are updated in AutoCAD. Labels: AMEP , Fixes , How To , Revit , Revit MEP , Tricks and Tips.
Just a short post tonight to plug a new blog that my friend Steven Shell decided to start called BIM: Integrating Art & Technology He is a practicing architect in Tuscon (sole practitioner) that skipped over the whole "CAD thing" and went straight to Revit from hand drafting. That and his own irrepressible style and creativity.
Being able to browse through projects on Revit Server would be boss too. That's the only operation Revit permits us to alter a linked file; alter and save changes to a file we don't have open in the active session. I have some reservations about Revit Server too. As for why this happens.in
If you apply User Keynotes and then change the number values (the Key Value parameter) for them in your keynote file they don't change in the Revit project to reflect the new numbers, even after you Reload the file. When this happens Revit keeps the old value intact. That strikes me as undesirable but I believe I understand why.
