With the shuttering of stores like Circuit City and Linens N’ Things, big box retailers looking to gain market share certainly have their choice of vacant store locations in prime markets and shopping centers. And depending on the condition of their new stores, the savings on retail construction costs to retrofit the space could be huge… if owners do their due diligence.
I attended a pre-bid conference on Thursday November 19, 2009 at Towson University for a CM-at risk project for the r emodel of two residence halls on campus. I’ve got to ask, are you still competitively bidding the bulk of your commercial construction projects? Really, you are? Interesting…. Sure, I know there will always be commercial developers who competitively bid all their projects, but from a commercial construction cost and timeline perspective, it pays to negotiate with a designated general contractor versus requesting multiple bids on a construction project.
Starting a new job ain’t easy. Trust me, I’ve done it sev eral times. There are few things in life that are as stressful as walking into an unknown organization and having to prove yourself to a bunch strangers. This becomes especially difficult when you are hired into a higher level position when you are now the boss of folks that have been there for years.

Here are a few suggestions to all those developers that want to make millions and really do have some great ideas that I just gleaned from the book Getting Real: The smarter, faster, easier way to build a successful web applicat
Each RFP you see will give you instruction on what is to be in your proposal. Sometimes it will ask for what’s called a “management plan.” This can sometimes trip technical writers up, but writing a management plan isn’t really that hard. In fact, once you get used to writing them, you may end up feeling like a management plan should appear in all your proposals.

If you've signed up for my virtual class and wondered where the handouts are, I've posted them today. I was holding off posting them so that I could rehearse (up to the last minute) and not discover some horrible mistake, at the last minute. There is one handout, one power point summary (I don't know if I'll actually use the power point, hate them) and two dataset folders: Large Project and Small Project.

When I lived in Avon, CO, a little town about ten miles west of Vail ski resort, the local news was a little sparse at ti mes, especially during the summer and fall. I found myself, on a few occasions, reading up on the pre-season performance of the volleyball team at the local middle school. There were some rough months out in the Vail Valley. So with all kinds of juicy gossip flying around the web these days, I’m going to give you some more with the public bid results for the remodel

I was pleased to see a notification this morning on my Twitter account that I believe will be valuable to all the listeners in the Twitterverse. Here’s a screen shot of the Retweet To Share Tweets (Beta): I think Twitter got this one right. If I want to know what my followers are really interested in, it should be their retweets. After all it is a call to action for their own followers and represents the groundswell of our followers reach too.
. As I get older, I’m noticing something. I don’t spellz so well anymore. You won’t notice this in my emails, letters, or proposals. That’s because I use spell check. But on this site and in my handwriting you see another side of me, a drooling idiot who can’t spell simple words like “your,” “delegate,” or “perfect.” It’s even more disturbing to me than it is to you.

The last Constructonomics post stirred the pot a bit in some civil engineering forums. The Sorry Kid, Construction is a Cyclical Industry post brought some interesting and thought provoking comments. One of which brought about some particular interest from myself because it touched on a subject that tends to rarely get touched. And without going into any more drawn-out chatter, I’ll just post the comment. .

It’s a funny thing how everyone has a blog but most have a dozen subscribers if that. In business you need to publicize your blog everywhere. I tried promoting it via a plain hyperlink in my email signature but no one clicked on it…that is until I made it an animated subscription. My email signature now automatically cycles through the last five posts.
I get to look at a lot of writing during my work. I’ve seen marketing materials from many firms. While the visuals are often nice, most of the words just plain suck. The other day, we were on a phone call talking to a firm Principal about a proposal effort. We were politely trying to explain why the writing that he gave for his firm was so bad.
