The recent survey of construction marketers ranked measuring results of marketing as their top priority for 2011 , beating out all priorities including internet and social media. Clearly in a difficult market, marketing is under increased scrutiny to prove results and justify budgets. The Construction Marketing Association will present a free webcast addressing this important topic on Monday, November 15 at 12 pm CST.

Commercial construction contractors can save clients thousands of dollars by knowing the right time to buy certain materials. I heard a Home Depot ad on the radio recently targeted to commercial general contractors that made me pause. The spot is about the costs of commercial construction and how buying building materials in bulk can help GCs save money and bring down a construction project bid so they win the contract.

Google loves LinkedIn and I’ve been including this fact in many powerpoint presentations and national speaking engagements for over a year now. There’s more to this love than how Google searches LinkedIn profiles. We can now see the extent of the relationship with today’s LinkedIn blog post announcing LinkedIn Labs (sounds and looks like Google Labs) and the great new projects contained within Labs to prove my point.

About a year ago, our team at Englewood Construction thought it would be a great idea to share our commercial construction news and experience through a blog. At first, I wasn’t sure. I’m an old-school guy so I like to talk to people face to face, or at least over the phone. Facebook is scary to me this Halloween. Facebook has been criticized frequently on their default privacy settings, but what’s frightening is they continue to want permission to access more information. As a business owner doing business with business (B2B) I was looking for more tools to improve my Facebook search results earlier this week. Low and behold Facebook has Advanced Profile Search 2.2 (Beta).

There is a justice center in Doylestown, PA bidding on November 18th, 2010 that will total in value approximately $50 million. I attended a mandatory pre-bid meeting about two weeks ago on this job. It looks like a great project, but unfortunately, I do not have the bonding capacity to propose on this project alone. I’m looking for someone who may be able to provide bonding for this job and partner with my firm.

The LEED Certification process can be quite complex. It takes months after a project’s completion to get the paperwork process, the paperwork itself can be a heafty stack, and that’s not even taking into account the complicated points framework, the certification gray-areas, the de-certification process and more… (Want a good discussion of all these frustrating and unanswered questions?

Twitter is a great tool if you know what you’re doing. Once I learned the basics, read a few books and then realized, like other “free” social networking sites that …things change rapidly in Twitter. I started bookmarking all the Twitter tweets I found valuable in Delicious, as these articles substantially enhanced my knowledge.

Sustainability is having far-reaching impacts on building standards, codes and specifications. It is being written into municipal by-laws and zoning, with most municipalities choosing LEED® as their green building standard. In the commercial sector, sustainable buildings have become the new benchmark for Class ‘A’ office space.

Green Building is all the rage in the United States. Whether it be a LEED project, or just a promise to the property owner to build or make a building more efficient and sustainable, as 2010 passes onto 2011, those in the construction industry are quite likely to run into projects with at least some green elements. When bidding, contracting and working on these projects, it’s important to know what might go wrong.

. {sharethis}. A contact of mine asked whether I knew of software that would help get their email newsletters past spam filters. What I explained is this. I am a rigid spam filterer. If you send me junk mail – spam. If you send me a newsletter about how your firm is so great – spam. I would label my own mother as a spammer, if need be. So the challenge is not so much the spam filtering technology, it’s the people who identify your email as spam.

One of our recently completed projects is the renovation of a lakefront cottage on Pleasant Lake, New London, New Hampshire. The property was subdivided and had originally had two cabins on it. A cabin on “The Point” was torn down to open up the lake view from the other cottage. Some of its materials were salvaged for use in the main cottage renovation.

One of our latest designs is a Lake Sunapee home for an older couple, their children, and grandchildren. The cottage style home fits in nicely with the architecture around the lake. Goals of the home are energy efficiency, one floor living for the parents, and well-designed common and private areas for each family. The project is in the design development stage, where we determine spatial requirements and accurate dimensions for rooms and areas, as well as outdoor space for entertaining.
