I enjoy the messages and questions that come across the LISTSERV of the Society of Marketing Professional Services. One person recently asked this question: “Anyone willing to share information or provide a resource for information about copyright or use of image or articles (such as google, etc.)?”. This is typically a legal question. And while it would be great to get a lawyers perspective on this question, Scott Braley gave an experienced-based guideline on using photographs in your proposals
Two articles that came out last week in The Boston Globe and the Wichita Business Journal talked about the fate befalling most architecture firms these days, the struggle to keep the doors open while projects are few and far between. Let's start with the Boston Globe article. In that story, Nancy Jenner, the acting director of the Boston Society of Architects, estimates that the average layoff rate in Boston architecture firms is already pushing a whopping 30 percent!
Sketches on tracing paper in the preliminary design phase come in handy to see alternate room layouts and spatial relationships. Clients love the artistry involved and the human element to their design. The client was unsure about whether to have the wood stove centered on the gable endwall or in the corner. The sketches were quick and extremely helpful in showing various furniture layouts as well as window and door options.

Every once in a while, I will be working along and notice that the + and - signs in the project browser are missing. They just disappear. I have to close Revit and re-open it to get them to return. To work around this when I just don't have time to restart Revit, I use a Windows accelerator key combination. Select a view with collapsed dependant views under it.

2009 is likely to be a year in which many construction liens are filed. As all of us in construction know, and as reported in the AGC Smart Brief , the beginning of 2009 and through 2010 will likely show an even greater downturn in the commercial and residential markets. These economic times will make mechanic’s liens, bonding and other proactive approaches to collection all the more important.
Interesting article in Business First of Columbus, the weekly business journal covering the Columbus, Ohio area, that talks about the fervent activity surrounding a proposed convention center hotel. The Franklin County Convention Facilities Authority wants a national design architect and a Central Ohio design firm to administer the $160 million project.
Trends in home design are moving away from specific rooms and space to materials and energy efficiency. Once you have created sheets, its nice to work in the frame of that sheet, but Revit is really set up to use views instead. A nice alternative is to open your sheet, right click on the view and pick Activate View. Now you can design directly in that view within the context of the sheet. This can really help when flag notes are being used. To deactivate the view, simply right click on the view and select. you guessed it Deactivate View.
Rainmakers aren’t born, they are made. All of our research and experience shows that. And usually there is an event when someone suddenly gets it. They get an insight into selling that allows them to embrace it. Some people have that experience early in their lives. Rainmaker and civil engineer, Steve Rush, got it one night as a ten-year old selling newspaper subscriptions door to door in Ohio.
According to the latest Washington (D.C.) Business Journal, Deltek, Inc. is suing three former employees who established a company called Iuvo Systems Inc. In response to Steve Staffords Blog post : STC is no more. Now it's SWC. To me this is harder to say and awkward. I think I may just stick with saying "sync" from now but am saddened by the loss of the revit language. STC was one of those phrases that you knew you were part of an exclusive club being a "reviteer". Say the password and you get to join our club.
I keep making the same mistake, then I have to figure it out again, so maybe posting about it will help. The problem is, I make a new family and when I place it in a test project it is half toned. Turns out, I just skipped a rather important step. I used a generic family template and forgot to set the appropriate family category (see below). The default generic models category displays half toned based off the Revit MEP view discipline setting.

Interesting poll question posed by PSMJ CEO and founder Frank Stasiowski on the LinkedIn networking site, but perhaps what's even more intriguing are the responses. Frank asked, "With signs of economic recovery, firms are beginning to hire again. Are you?" Answer choices include: hiring right now, advertising but not hiring, hiring within three months, hiring in six to nine months, or not hiring for a long while.

Recently I've been working on a project that required a ton of electrical families. Now before all the engineers out there have a fit, We're doing an interior fit out where we are showing the locations of all the power devices. The MEP engineers are not in Revit so we're have to do this coordinating ourselves. Because of this I was called upon to create a ton of electrical content for us poor architects and interior designers to use in 2009 mind you.
