This week’s tip concerns using Estimating Explorer, the bid management utility that is bundled with your Sage Timberline Estimating package. We recommend using Estimating Explorer for both creating & managing your Timberline Estimates. This accomplishes multiple goals: Consistency in the way estimates are created, and estimate data fields are filled in.

A green home minimizes the negative impact on its environment through its home design. Here are a few considerations your architect takes into account when designing a green home: 1. Site: Evaluations and analysis of access, slope, ledge, soil, bodies of water, and vegetation in order to limit the home’s impact on the site environment. This includes the site location (farmland, wetland, protected species habitats) and proximity to public transportation, parks, schools, and stores. 2.

Many door and room tags in the architect's Revit file are just really large and dark when they are linked into your Revit MEP project. They can also mask out MEP content like lights and diffusers. We can bring them down a notch by editing these families in the linked architects project file. Here's how you do it. Open the Architects project file, find an offending tag and select it.
As most of you know, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the $819 billion economic stimulus package last night. The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate, where passage is expected sometime next week. However, because the two bills will be somewhat different, they will need to be ironed out in a conference committee into a version that will then need passage again from the Senate and the House before making their way to President Barack Obama's desk.

Sometimes it’s the little things that bog you down when you’re using Timberline Estimating. Like simply entering a Subcontractor or a Client into an estimate that you know is in Timberline’s Address Book, but you can’t see when you click into the pick list. Here’s how to make a record in Sage Timberline Office Address Book available in Timberline Estimating: Open AB, and find the Company or Person record that you’d like to use in Timberlne Estimating.
'At some point, it’s just ridiculous. And I love it. Tuesday, we had a Teleseminar called “Your 90 Day Contractor Marketing Map”. This was under-promoted (intentionally) to a tightly controlled list. For reasons I’ll let you figure out, we got 41 pages of questions. I couldn’t answer 41 pages of questions if you gave me a two week head start. (I did answer about 15).
Why build a green home? Every positive action counts. Many people assume that if you are going to build a green home , you’ll be spending far more money than a regular home. This is not true. From my vantage point, any improvement to any portion of the home building process helps the environment. According to the Brookings Institution, by the year 2030 there will be 34 million new housing units constructed and 23 million existing units will be replaced.

Yesterday I had a viewport that I could not select in AutoCAD MEP. It just couldn't be picked even with a crossing window. I really didn't know if it was a viewport. To get at it I issued the moved command and typed "all" at the command line effectively selecting every object in the drawing. Then holding down the shift key I unselected everything with a giant crossing window, leaving the un-selectable object still in the selection set.
Tough news came out this morning that Burt Hill had laid off 18 percent of its workforce in the United Arab Emirates. Burt Hill had designed a motor-racing theme park there, but cut its workforce as the global credit crisis had forced property developers to unload employees and delay projects. Happy New Year, and welcome to BC’s Blog for January. The good news is that most of us made it, companies largely intact, through the first year of the recession. We’ve been keeping an eye on President-elect Obama’s stimulus plan. According to ENR, over a billion dollars worth of work (per state) is in various stages of planning and bidding, in Hawaii, Arizona, and Washington.

'Ahh, the nostalgia of car trips. Took one this summer with the whole family, written about in these pages and was only KIDDING about trying to drive and swat my children simultaneously. I actually stopped the car. Anyway.… Just got back from taking my son to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. It’s a 5 ½ hour drive there, even with 515 horsepower from my grossly “un-green” car that may cause Global Warming all by itself.
Interesting Associated Press article that came out yesterday about the $825 billion economic stimulus package. In the article, which runs in a question-and-answer format, Mark Zandi , chief economist at Moody's Economy.com, says the stimulus package will reduce the number of jobs lost in the next two years, not stop workers from losing jobs. Without the package, however, roughly 8 million jobs will be lost by the end of 2010, pushing the unemployment rate to more than 11 percent.

Came across an interesting article on the PR Week site that talks about predictions for the top media trends of 2009. If these come true, they will have a significant impact on how PR professionals pitch media outlets. Among the calculations from Birnbach Communications. * Dozens of newspapers will shift to an online-only model. The traditional media that stay in print will use more maps, graphics, lists, rankings, and statistics, all while running shorter articles.

The sad truth is that many A/E firms - even profitable ones - are laying off staff. For most of us, losing our job is a personally demoralizing and disempowering event - even if the reasons we have been let go are completely unrelated to our job performance or work habits. As our period of unemployment lengthens from weeks to months, our notions about what is a good job fit may become more relaxed as a sense of quiet desperation may set in.
The AIA's Architecture Billings Index moved up a little in December, but continues to mirror the slumping economy. Following consecutive months with record low scores, the December ABI rating was 36.4, up from the 34.7 mark in November (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The inquiries for new projects score was 37.7, down from what was the historic low point of 38.3 in November.
Got an e-mail this morning from PSMJ consultant Charles Nelson in our Australia office that read as follows: "It appears that Australia will be less hurt by the global recession than most other places, but we will be badly hit by the drop in resources demand from China. Mining is a big export here, and a big employer of engineers." Charles tells us that he is working on a survey of attitudes about perceptions of the future and it will share it when it is completed.
