We’re fast-approaching the half-year point in the worst economy in nearly 80 years. Most of our clientele is doing better than the economy. We’ve had only one of our customers go out of business, not bad out of the roughly 50 companies we work with. (The one that didn’t make it was an anomaly- the president skipped the country, which really had nothing to do with the viability of the business.
I think a lot of people selling professional services have a hard time figuring out what the heck they are going to say when preparing for a sales presentation. Engineers especially struggle with this. Some engineers find it hard to stop thinking like an engineer and start thinking like a marketer. They are often more comfortable with numbers than words.
I have been interviewing Circle of Excellence firms this month and asking the question, “where do you see the A/E industry headed over the next 3-5 years and beyond?” The first couple of COE firm execs I queried went directly to “there will be more design-build projects”. The opinion of these top execs is that a design firm has two choices: 1) develop a strategy to lead D-B projects that includes things like changing firm culture to accept the risks and educating clients on the merits of D-B pro

If you are like me, (and I trust that most of you are not), you don't really rely on disconnect markers in AutoCAD MEP that much. So image my surprise when I noticed the new disconnect markers with no real idea what they were. See the image below with the new markers on the left and the old on the right. I may be even dumber if indeed these showed up in 2009 which I skipped.
The Korte Company has recently completed the expansion of Three Square, a local non-profit food bank which provides much needed meals to the homeless population of Las Vegas. The 70,000 square foot tenant improvement includes new warehouse space, meeting rooms, walk-in coolers and freezers and a state-of-the-art kitchen for prominent chefs to display their donated culinary expertise.
When I started working at my current job, I inherited a system that consisted of ACT! for our contacts, Deltek CRM/Proposals for our project info, and Deltek Advantage for accounting. In general, I find the Deltek products to be overly expensive and not very user friendly. And I liked Act! even less. Being so frustrated with ACT!, I said to myself “I’ll make my own contact system.
An article posted yesterday to The Architect's Newspaper web site posited the notion that the AIA Architecture Billings Index results that show a recent uptick in inquiries might actually be signaling not renewed interest in work, but more competition for what little is available. Indeed, AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker points out that the higher level of inquiries could actually be a negative indicator, as it means clients are playing the competitive field against itself for greater savings, d
There are certainly an abundance of green building materials on the market today. How do you determine which one is better than the other? One way is by considering its life cycle: where its raw materials come from, how it is manufactured and what happens during the manufacturing process, and where the product ends up. These are some things to consider when comparing green products: Do the raw materials come from: The earth; A forest; Chemicals mixed together How are they harvested, and do they

Me: "Knock Knock, You say who's there ?" You: "Uh. Who's there?" Me: "Control Freak, You say control freak who ?" Yeah, I can' help myself. I want to lock everything down. You know, for every one's own good, but also because I like it my way. I ran into a bit of a downer with AutoCAD MEP 2010 because of my controlling nature. I placed the enterprise cuix menu on a read only drive.
I'm happy to report that my two courses on Project Templates (an UnConference Session and a 90 minute class) were accepted for AU 2009. Assuming everything is scheduled properly the "conclusions" of the Unconference discussion will be incorporated into the 90 minute class (should make handouts a challenge ;) ). If people have thoughts on what makes a good (or bad) Project Templates, feel free to either comment or drop me a line via e-mail.
Professionals sometimes ask me if it is best to send a prospective client an email before calling her, especially if it is someone you don’t know well. They are usually looking for affirmation. I respond with this story: Many years ago, I was taught how to make cold-call appointments with senior executives by Bruce McNaughton, a brilliant rainmaker who could get a meeting with anyone.

Even though the decline is design services billings has stabilized, the American Institute of Architects' Architecture Billings Index also indicates that any economic recovery has also flat-lined. The AIA reported this morning that the May ABI rating was 42.9, nearly identical to the 42.8 mark in April. This score indicates a continued overall decline in demand for design services as any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings.

I am still fleshing things out, but I will be sure to cover everything from setting up line weights and plotting to simple, effective Revit families.

Things have been good here but I did run into some trouble with the annotation objects for my families hiding under the surface of floors rather than showing themselves in plan view.
