Last month, our Englewood Construction business development team had a great trip to Las Vegas for RECon, the global retail real estate convention hosted annually by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). It was refreshing to hear RECon attendees be so open to new ideas and more inclusive when it comes to ICSC offerings.
All and all, it was a great experience at ICSC once again. Charles, along with additional space being added to Hawthorn Center in Vernon Hills. We haven’t seen that much new retail construction at once in quite some time. The trend I’ll take away that got me most excited is the commercial construction industry can think big again.
The tone of the attendees at ICSC’s “Global Retail Real Estate Convention” (RECon) in Las Vegas last month was as positive and energizing as it was in the commercial construction boom years before 2008.
Earlier this month, the Englewood team headed to Las Vegas for RECon , the global retail real estate convention hosted annually by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).
But despite several attempts at a North American invasion, including a 2008 joint venture with ICSC, BREEAM has never been widely accepted nor utilized in the U.S., Created in Great Britain in 1990, based upon the work of British engineer and architect John Doggart, an early version of BREEAM was the genesis of LEED.

In June’s Hard Hat Chat post, which shared our takeaways from ICSC RECon , we noted that most retail developers and landlords say nothing is off the table when it comes to filling vacant space or bringing new traffic to retail centers. Good News for the Local Retail Landscape.
But this year, ‘inclusion’ seemed to be the name of the game, with ICSC and RECon reaching out to other sectors that are leasing mall space and focusing much more on hospitality, restaurant and entertainment. In the past, RECon was pretty much dominated by retail, with just a smattering of reps from restaurant and other sectors.
The Retail/Hospitality strategy is based on data from the University of Shopping Centers Economic Development Program by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). Once a business has interacted with the development program, they may offer a testimonial on the www.thinkrochester.biz website, and may refer vendors and suppliers.
